Ecosystem Development Workshop 2.0 – From Vision to AI-Driven Reality

5/2/2025

From Startup Commons to Digiole: The Evolution of Ecosystem Development
Picture
In the past, as Startup Commons, we conducted Startup Ecosystem Development Workshops worldwide (30+ in the past 10+ years), helping regions assess, structure, and enhance their startup environments. Our work provided frameworks for data-driven decision-making, policy development, and collaborative innovation support, ensuring that startup ecosystems had the right foundations to thrive.

Now, at the beginning of 2025, through our transition to Digiole (which now encompasses Startup Commons), we have fully embraced the AI-driven world. We not only have market-validated use cases to share but also simple, effective ways for any ecosystem to get started with AI-powered transformation.

It’s time to bring back the successful workshop approach, but now with a fully updated agenda, methodologies, and solutions—aligned with the latest AI-enabled innovations. This Ecosystem Development Workshop 2.0 combines decades of expertise in startup ecosystem development with cutting-edge insights into how Agentic AI can revolutionize economic growth.

A Look Back: The 2017 Recommendations That Predicted the Future
While AI-driven ecosystems might sound like a new concept, the reality is that we advised startup ecosystems as early as 2017 to begin preparing for this shift. At the time, we proposed digital infrastructure that would:

✅ Capture real-time data for startup ecosystem performance
✅Enable intelligent matchmaking between founders, investors, and ecosystem support organizations
✅ Facilitate a transparent, AI-driven dashboard to guide policy decisions
✅ Develop AI-assisted recommendations for startup funding and support

Our recommendations included three, five, and ten-year strategies for these ecosystems, outlining the digital transition that needed to happen to stay competitive globally.

Looking back, it's both funny and not funny to see how many of these recommendations were never implemented—despite their alignment with what’s now happening today. Had they been acted upon, these ecosystems would have been years ahead of their peers instead of scrambling to catch up.

We can now pinpoint exactly what could have been achieved and use that to demonstrate how AI-driven strategies can still be implemented—just at a much faster pace.

Ecosystem Development Workshop 2.0 – What’s New?
Our new workshop format is designed to take startup ecosystems from legacy models to AI-driven systems in a practical, actionable way. Key topics include:

🔍 Identifying the Biggest Bottlenecks – Understanding the real friction points in your startup ecosystem and how AI can remove inefficiencies, improve decision-making, and enhance the founder journey.

🎯 Starting with a Small, Focused AI Use Case – Learning how to implement AI-driven solutions step by step—whether it’s an AI assistant for startup programs, an automated FAQ system, or an AI-powered ecosystem knowledge base.

🔄 AI as an Iterative Learning Process – AI isn’t a one-time fix; it’s a continuous improvement engine. Discover how to collect and analyze ecosystem data, spot trends, and refine AI-powered services over time.

📊 Building AI-Enabled Ecosystem Insights – Developing a self-improving knowledge base where every interaction with entrepreneurs and stakeholders feeds back into a smarter ecosystem.

🤝 AI + Human Collaboration – Exploring how AI can enhance—not replace—human interactions, freeing up mentors, advisors, and policymakers to focus on higher-value support for startups.

Time to Move Forward
While we can reflect on what could have been, our focus is now on what’s next. The opportunity is still here—but the speed of action matters more than ever.

If you’re part of a startup ecosystem, accelerator, incubator, or government program, it’s time to rethink how your ecosystem operates and bring AI-driven intelligence into your framework.

Togo startup ecosystem mapping project - A Summary

20/11/2024

Uncovering key components for the development of the startup ecosystem in Togo
We are excited to share with you the journey and key insights from our recently completed project aimed at strengthening Togo’s startup ecosystem. Our efforts focused on assessing the Togolese startups ecosystem and setting the foundations towards a dynamic startup ecosystem mapping to minimize the human manual data collection intervention in order to bring more real-time and accurate understanding of the startup environment in Togo. Here’s a summary of the project.
📊 The Project In Numbers
Picture
🔄 The Process
Taking the Startup Commons Startup Development Phases Framework as the reference model for the project, the main activities of the project were:
  1. Identifying Key Ecosystem Stakeholders: entrepreneurs, startups, support organizations, financiers, investors, events, media, corporates, the educational system, and more.
  2. Mapping Ecosystem Stakeholder Interactions: we explored how these actors interact, revealing key relationships between entrepreneurs and the supporting organizations and the resources they rely on.
  3. Analyzing and Capturing Information: we identified what types of information is captured during interactions, how it is gathered, how accessible and shareable it is and its relevance to tracking ecosystem performance.
🏅 One Differential Deliverable
Beyond identifying the current situation, gaps, and future roadmap for the Togolese startup ecosystem, a key output is the blueprint of the ecosystem information repository, which will serve as the heart and core of the system. This repository will:
  • Aggregate, store, process, and distribute data, ensuring a robust and scalable infrastructure to support the ecosystem’s dynamic needs.
  • Provide a unified and comprehensive view of the ecosystem by integrating various data sources, enabling informed decision-making, and fostering growth and development.
Picture
💡 Innovating in Consulting
As part of our commitment to innovation and accessibility, we set up an AI Assistant powered by Digiole that consolidated all the accumulated knowledge from the project—including reports, presentations, recorded calls, and more. This AI Assistant, customised according to the local context, ensures that every stakeholder has 24/7 access to project insights.
Picture
With the AI Assistant, the project stakeholders can:
  • Ask any question about the project and receive immediate answers on topics ranging from data insights to strategic recommendations.
  • Access key information at any time, without waiting for team members to respond.
  • Overcome language barriers, as the AI Assistant supports both English and French, providing clear communication for Togo’s stakeholders.
  • Track each interaction, including the questions asked and the responses provided, while flagging any questions that weren't properly addressed. This offers us a valuable feedback loop, allowing us to continuously improve the assistant’s knowledge base and ensure that every question receives an accurate and comprehensive reply.

Additionally, when integrated with the ecosystem information repository, the AI assistant will be able to answer questions not only based on existing information but also on new information as it flows into the repository. Simultaneously, it will capture fresh insights directly from its interactions, all in real time. This transforms the AI assistant into both a source of up-to-date information and a tool for collecting data at the ecosystem level. By deploying 10, 100, or more AI assistants, you can scale this process, enhancing the distribution and collection of information to cover a wider array of use cases and interaction points.

If you’re interested in learning more, initiating a similar study in your territory or collaborating to implement these solutions, please reach out to us.

Let's do, as a first step,  a score summary:
Picture
Score Summary:
  • Count: 61 scores were analyzed.
  • Mean: The average score is approximately 0.336.
  • Standard Deviation: The scores vary with a standard deviation of about 0.227.
  • Minimum Score: The lowest score is 0.0.
  • 25th Percentile: 25% of scores are at or below 0.21.
  • Median (50th Percentile): Half of the scores are below 0.34.
  • 75th Percentile: 75% of scores are below 0.54.
  • Maximum Score: The highest score is 0.72.

Actions to Consider:
  • Improvement of Low Scoring Responses: Identify the cases where scores are particularly low (near 0) to understand if the responses are off-topic, inaccurate, or not helpful. If they are inaccurate, we can directly update my knowledge base by providing the content that is demanded.
And then, let’s analyze common phrases to understand the actual questions or themes better.

Here are some of the most common phrases found in the "Statement" column, which hint at recurring topics or questions:
  • "empresas emergentes" (emerging companies) - Indicates frequent discussions or inquiries about startups.
  • "company culture" and "foundational values" - Suggests a focus on establishing strong cultural foundations in early stages of business development.
  • "qué medidas" (what measures) - Likely relates to what actions or strategies can be implemented in specific scenarios.
  • "strong company" and "early stages" - Points to concerns about building a robust company from the beginning.
  • "cultura empresarial" (corporate culture) - Indicates interest in how to develop or maintain a good corporate culture.

These topics may suggest that users are often interested in strategic advice for startups, particularly about building a strong foundational culture and implementing effective business strategies.

Actions to consider:
  • Resource Development: Based on these common themes, we would consider reviewing the content addressing those questions and developing focused content in any format (guides, FAQs, or webinar transcription) that address these frequently asked questions more comprehensively.
  • Feedback System Improvement: If these questions are repeatedly asked, it might indicate that existing responses or resources are not sufficiently addressing user needs or that the questions are globally common. Reviewing and enhancing these could be beneficial.
Conclusions
By simply putting out this Team Building & Shareholders Agreement AI Assistant for some days, we are now able to capture insights that offer a multitude of strategic advantages:

  1. It enhances entrepreneurs knowledge, allowing for a deeper understanding of their needs and preferences specifically on the topic matter, which in turn informs better resource allocation and this AI Assistant development.
  2. Such a system improves customer service by refining response quality and efficiency, providing personalized experiences at scale, and maintaining high service levels.
  3. This not only gives a competitive edge by identifying market trends and adapting to them proactively but also boosts operational efficiency through a real-time feedback loop.
  4. Moreover, it enables scalable solutions that manage increasing interaction volumes cost-effectively

Therefore, this approach not only improves entrepreneurship support operations but also fundamentally enhances how support organizations engage with and serve their entrepreneurs, driving growth and satisfaction through test-measure-learn loops.

Introducing Ecosystem 180: using AI to optimize startup journeys

11/12/2023

Discover how Ecosystem 180 revolutionizes startup ecosystems by offering advanced, AI-driven tools that surpass traditional methods, enhancing efficiency and innovation
In a world where innovation, entrepreneurship, and startup ecosystems are celebrated as the dynamic powerhouses driving our societies forward, a glaring paradox emerges. These hubs, brimming with technology, innovation, and brilliant minds, are paradoxically mired in outdated operational practices. Why, in 2023, do our ecosystem operations and technology strategies resemble relics from the 1980s? Across the globe, every nation, irrespective of its development status, faces this anachronism.
Picture
The disconnect is stark and unsettling. The AI revolution has transformed industries, yet the technological underpinnings of our economic development initiatives remain woefully archaic. This chasm exists at every level, from international financiers to local economic development units. The private sector, while innovative in other realms, lags in ecosystem development, constrained by the necessity of public-private collaboration in establishing foundational infrastructure.

But there's a shift on the horizon. The era of multi million-euro barriers to advanced digital platforms is ending. A new paradigm emerges, one that synergizes the agility and global reach of the SAAS model with the bespoke, lock-in-free freedom of custom-built solutions. This approach isn't just strategically smarter; it's a cost-effective, time-efficient leap into the future of ecosystem development.

In the realm of startup ecosystems, effective data management is not just a necessity – it's a game changer. Existing tools for startup ecosystem development have offered partial solutions, but often at the cost of narrow view, flexibility, integration, and real-time data utilization. These limitations have led to disjointed experiences, data silos, and inefficient resource utilization, hindering the true potential of entrepreneurial ecosystems, and what worries the most, making startup progress slower.
🔍 The Shortcomings of Traditional Tools:
  • Limited Integration: Many existing solutions lack seamless interoperability between different applications and systems.
  • Data Silos: The prevalence of isolated data systems often leads to inconsistent and incomplete information across the ecosystem.
  • Customization Challenges: Custom built solutions or off-the-shelf products often come with high costs, rigid structures, and lack of customization, leading to vendor lock-in scenarios.
  • Real-Time Data Accessibility: Access to real-time, actionable data is often limited, impacting decision-making and responsiveness.
🚀 Introducing Ecosystem 180: A New Era in Assisting Startup Ecosystem Development

That's where Ecosystem 180 steps in, breaking the mold with its holistic and innovative approach. Designed specifically for innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems, it transcends these challenges by offering:

🌐 Global Data Repository: A centralized source for all ecosystem data, promoting consistency and eliminating data silos within and between ecosystems

🔗Seamless Integration: Unprecedented interoperability among applications, enhancing efficiency and user experience.

Webinar Recording - Using machine learning to enable automation & intelligence in your ecosystem

9/6/2021

A machine learning prototype of the use case we are working with for initiating ecosystem intelligence implementation
Picture
Author: Digiole Oy
As an ecosystem grows and evolves, more digital resources and services are created to support startups and entrepreneurs in their different phases, new people decide to initiate the startup journey, more support is offered, more interactions among ecosystem actors are generated, etc. All of them are scattered in different tools, applications and platforms, increasing the ecosystem builders’ needs to connect them to help ecosystem users navigate in this complexity. Doing this manually simply limits the scalability factor to orchestrate the ecosystem and therefore its capacity to provide and serve startups and entrepreneurs with the right answers.

In this webinar, we are presenting the opportunities around machine learning to enable more automation and intelligence in your ecosystem. We will give attendees a behind-the-scenes glimpse to get to know the use case we are working with for automated ‘startup development phases’ -labelling for startup events. Plus, you will see our current prototype work of this first machine learning use case.
